Idaho Springs is known as the home of the Gold Rush and the Gateway to Mount Evans. At 7,526 feet elevation is is well shy of the top of Evans at 14,265 feet. With the history and extensive recreation near by, there is lots to do near town before you come back for some shopping and the restaurants in the historic downtown area.
In 1859, the first substantial gold discovery was made on Clear Creek. This was near where the creak now flows through the center of town. After this, the Gold Rush began and Idaho Spring was in the center of it. You can still tour some of the mines near by. Visit the Visitor Center/Museum to learn more about the mining in the area.
After Gold Rush, Idaho Springs became a tourist center. In the beautiful valley with, nestled at the foot of Mount Evans, people from the city came to enjoy the recreation near by and dine and shop in the down town area. Take a walking tour to learn more about some of the historic buildings.
Now you can enjoy the the zip lines right near town, or go white water rafting on Clear Creek. Some of the best skiing in the Rockies are with in an hour. Mount Evans wilderness area has miles and miles of hiking and back packing. If you are tired when you return be sure to check out Indian Hot Springs.
